Elayne Sobel of Lewisburg was awarded the Isabelle and Karl Patten Award for exceptional community service. The award was created to recognize the effots of people pursuing the cause of social justice in the Lewisburg area.
A settlement was reached in a class-action lawsuit filed by the Lewisburg Prison Project that challenged conditions at the Northumberland County Prison. The suit was filed in February 2008 on behalf of 12 prisoners by the Lewisburg Prison
Project. Several officials have disputed claims that the facility was unsafe and failed to provide proper medical care. Both parties agreed that a settlement would be the best result ad the County Commissioners approved a settlement agreement. The proposed settlement was approved by the district court.
