As of today, the federal Bureau of Prisons announced that Special Management Units have a two year limit for inmates with most of them being transferred out after one year. Dave Sprout, a paralegal with the Lewisburg Prison Project, believes this announcement is a step in the right direction in regards to the treatment of the prisoners. Karen Morin, a Bucknell professor who has studied the Lewisburg penitentiary, agrees that the previous treatment of inmates at SMUs does nothing to improve their mental illnesses.
